Some descriptions are written as 'interviews' with authors, alive or dead, in which the dialogue is taken directly from the author's work; some are imagined scenes of actual events; some are straight accounts of research data, often illustrated with graphs. The book is written for those without a strong medical or scientific background and is particularly useful for parents who are facing the decision of whether to vaccinate their children.

The book, Evidence of Harm, Mercury in Vaccines and the Autism Epidemic: A Medical Controversy, was written by New York Times contributor David Kirby. By most accounts, autism is now epidemic in the United States. In the 1990’s reported autism cases among American children began spiking, from about 1 in 10,000 children in 1987 to a shocking 1 in 166 today. In this period, new shots containing a mercury-based preservative called Thimerosal were added to the nation’s already crowded vaccination schedule. Meanwhile, some parents noticed that their healthy children were descending into silent, disturbed, and physically ill behavior after receiving vaccinations. In 1999, the FDA announced that children were being exposed to mercury at very young ages at levels far exceeding federal regulations, but the public health establishment failed to take parental concerns about the impact seriously.

Murphy's book is important in part simply because it is one of only a few
that shed light on the little-known hazards of vaccination. (Vaccination is
the term sometimes used instead of immunization, since, as Murphy
shows, vaccines do not guarantee immunity from childhood diseases.)
Many contain toxins, and some are known to cause injurious
reactions--even death. Despite, or perhaps because of, this disturbing
evidence, most parents seem afraid to investigate the issue, and some are
unaware of it. Then, too, there are those parents who decline to inoculate
their children--a controversial but conscious decision. This book's
availability in libraries is critical; Murphy's thoroughly researched and
well-documented effort will, one hopes, make decisions about
inoculations somewhat easier. Murphy should especially be commended
for emphasizing the development of natural immunities, such as occur

As a research scientist with 30 years of medical research behind me, including 10 years in
biotechnology and vaccine development, I had never questioned the basic assumptions regarding
vaccination. Scheiber's book on vaccine research has completely changed my views on the safety
and efficacy of vaccination. She cites study after study, such as the 1950's studies with polio
vaccine which involved nearly 2 million children, which conclusively showed at the time that the
utility of polio vaccination is zero. Well, I thought as I read on, at least the smallpox vaccine wiped
out smallpox. Wrong! It was also exhaustively compared with non-vaccination and found to have
no benefit. In fact, the vaccine has no effect on smallpox infection except to predispose the
vaccinee to infection. I had no idea. I am still in a state of shock. Hasn't anyone at the Centers for
Disease Control looked at the data? Why such a practice is still continued in the face of all this
evidence is beyond my comprehension. Needless to say, my research interests are no longer
directed toward vaccination but rather toward something more useful and productive. This book is
an excellent summary of the history of vaccination with numerous references at the end of each
chapter. It has some typos which confuse the reader on occasion but the content is well worth the
time it takes to read this excellent book. This book is an eye opener!

As a physician, I was skeptical of vaccination efficacy and safety a decade ago. Since this book
was released, I have solidified my opinion against vaccines; in advising my patients and caring for
my own child. Every physician should read this book. Compulsory, government-mandated
vaccinations will predictably be abolished if the truth is widely disseminated. Take a look at Harris
Coulter's fine work on vaccination and criminality. It will wake you up!
