Images Of Poliomyelitis

Corporate Dynamics

Cartels can control a man's [or a woman's] action and philosophy.

- Joseph Borkin, Germany's Master Plan; The Story Of Industrial Offensive (1943)

Ciba-Geigy/Sandoz (Novartis), I.G. Farben

In 1996, Novartis was created through the merger of Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz, the largest corporate merger ever, to that date.

DDT, Clioquinol, malathion, and Ritalin are four of the more notorious toxic products owned and marketed by Novartis. Malathion may have been licensed out to Monsanto and others, as its name is no longer associated with association with malathion in the media, according to a recent (October, 1999) cursory check. In 1996 malathion was associated with Novartis.

Ciba-Geigy, and other prominent chemical firms, have had substantial ties with I.G. Farben, the giant industrial firm that contributed heavily to Hitler's rise to power. I.G. Farben is known for its huge slave labor camps of World War II, and as a major manufacturer of toxic chemicals. Are the ties that bound Ciba-Geigy to I.G. Farben merely business ties, or do they go beyond, with I.G. Farben a characteristic example of the poison industry?

Ritalin, the amphetamine-like drug prescribed to children for Attention Deficit Disorder, and Prozac has been implicated with many of the recent string of massacres through the efforts of independent journalist Jon Rappoport and John Quin (Newshawk). Rappoport describes a study that found Ritalin causing a host of psychotic disorders in children.

Rappoport reviewed the Merrow Report (featured on Public Television) which revealed that Ciba-Geigy funded CHADD (Children with Attention Deficit Disorder) with $818,000 and that the U.S. Department of Education also funded CHADD with $750,000 to produce a video (Facing the Challenge of ADD) promoting Ritalin. The CHADD video was circulated throughout the U.S. educational system. The CHADD video devoted only 20 seconds to Ritalin's adverse effects. It included interviews of parents who were satisfied with the effects of Ritalin on their children, yet, amazingly, and not obviously, all of these interviewed parents were CHADD board members. This Merrow Report investigation was also the subject of a The New York Times article (10/20/95) by Walter Goodman, "Questioning Treatment For Attention Disorder".

The Merrow Report, according to Rappoport in his "Shooting Position Paper":

The PBS television series, The Merrow Report, produced in 1996 a program called "Attention Deficit Disorder: A Dubious Diagnosis?" The Educational Writer's Association awarded the program first prize for investigative reporting in that year. I can recall no other piece of television journalism since the Vietnam war which has managed to capture on film government officials in the act of realizing that they have made serious mistakes.

Duesberg reveals an unpublicized epidemic of polio-like disease in Japan during 1959-1961. The disease, S.M.O.N. is described as a neurological disease which was caused by another Ciba-Geigy product, a pharmaceutical called Clioquinol, which contains toxic characteristics similar to DDT (see SMON, www.duesberg).

It is not easy to believe that Ciba-Geigy is unaware of the correlations between death, disease, and their business. Are they primarily concerned with balancing their profits against their high-powered public ethical and legal images, or is there even something else perhaps more sinister that drives Ciba-Geigy's mindset? How good can a world leader in the death business be, after all?

Prevailing dominant public images purport that the benefits of pesticides far outweigh the dangers, that the world would starve if pesticides were not applied to food crops, that the status quo is a necessary evil, a manifestation of the real-politic -- that a toxic Earth is the result of the innocent interplay of economics, just people trying to make a buck. Biskind and many others have questioned the working value of pesticides as a self-perpetuating mistake, and the links below question the motives of the toxic chemical industry.

It is quite possible to view these corporations as more than economic entities, to view them as cold-blooded elites hiding in the Swiss mountains and British executive offices, protected from investigation by Swiss law and an elite power network, motivated by a dark philosophy that contains no hint of ethics or morality. Is their methodology pure evil or just business evolvement with each department manipulating the other and in turn manipulating the dark elements and weaknesses of the people through media and economics? Or is it innocent? Or beyond good and evil? The chemical industry's access to governmental officials is well-documented (Fagin & Lavelle, Toxic Deception (1996)). Ciba may even get help from covert agencies, since, according to Dick Russell, author of The Man Who Knew Too Much (a book based upon interviews of a covert agent and the subsequent investigations in the national archives to confirm the data gathered during the interviews) covert agencies exist to make the world a better place for the Fortune 500. Access to Geigy's records and accountability for their actions under laws not controlled by them or their peers would reveal their degree of innocence, however, this is unlikely to occur unless as the result of a peer struggle among the very powerful.

These corporations develop, produce, influence governmental policy, and control distribution within the integrated markets of war chemicals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and vaccines. It is one thing to market to informed people various options for voluntary self-poisoning. It is another to deceive people through mass promotion and commercial enculturation, to influence the flow of grant monies to "scientific" studies -- to sell disease causing chemicals and then toxic antidotes (pharmaceuticals or as chemotherapies).

Global Leader In The Life Sciences

Though Novartis is known for its state-of-the-art poisons, it promotes itself as a "global leader in the Life Sciences, committed to improving health and well-being through innovative products and services."

Novartis describes its positioning in three major markets, Health, Consumer Health, and Agriculture -- not -- poisons for the military-medical industrial complex and poisons for the agricultural complex.

Novartis describes its history, beginning with Johann Rudolf Geigy-Menuseus (1733-1793), who began "trading in materials, chemicals, dyes and drugs of all kinds in Basel" (Switzerland), and traces the history of Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz in terms of key product developments, finishing up with its 1996 mega-merger.

Global Leader In The Death Sciences

On its website, Novartis projects power, respect, beauty and wealth -- like the self-promotions of any large company. No hint of a correlation of its products with polio can be found on the website nor any details regarding its relation to I.G. Farben or Farben's link to Nazi slave camps. The tragedies and lawsuits related to Clioquinol or Ritalin are not explained. The word "malathion" does not show when the site is searched.

Paradox of the Individual

Responsibility for mass poisoning does not necessarily fall entirely on Novartis. The successful existence of a mass poison industry implies a paradox or weakness in human nature as much as in Novartis. Successful leaders and organizations exist by satisfying their constituencies and satsifying the desires of their consumers. Novartis claims that it knows its consumers best, however, most of us are unwitting or unwilling consumers.

We are driven to an examination of ourselves and to an education in politics, power, human psychology, sociology, and philosophy. We are driven to educate each other about the existence of Machiavellian structures and their business methods, to learn about our own weaknesses, our desire for power, and desire to serve power, to understand our desires to place ourselves within authoritarian images in attempting to gain a share of the images of power, or, in desperation, to alleviate self-disgust. We have invited our exploitation by the Wizards of Oz. Primo Levi wrote that the worst perpetrators of injustice within the German slave camps of World War II often were the inmates themselves, eager to please their German masters.

Why are so many proud to fear a bug -- as if this is an admirable, distinctive trait? As if this is necessary to show superiority to the bug? Why do many find achievement in the death of a bacteria, virus or an bug? Pesticides are given names that appeal to certain types of human vanities, such as Machete, Ram Rod, Landmaster, Far Go, and Roundup. Self-image is everything. When a farmer uses a pesticide he is given a sense of connection to a larger culture, a high-tech connection to a perceived power center, he is able to serve and coordinate with authorities and experts at the expense of his and his fellow citizens' health and environment. He is further distanced from his own crops and livestock which he conquers and exploits like a Caesar. He becomes a 'realistic', business-like, military victor -- with the aid of a primitive poison, DDT, a pile of glossy brochures, and an audio/video sales package.

It is understandable that advertising can get people to accept and even enjoy a low quality product, like junk food, however, it takes a lot of thought to even begin to understand why and how people would poison themselves and their children.

Some people want to know about the health effects of Novartis' products so they can make an informed choice. The following was found on the Novartis site under the links, "Discussion, Biotechnology".

Novartis has no reservations about the safety of its products and complies with the consumer’s desire for information about the benefit-risk profile of genetically modified products.

The exact information consumers wish to receive may differ from one country to the next. Local Novartis companies meet these information needs in accordance with legal requirements and market demands.

It is doubtful that Novartis' compliance with this "consumer's desire for information" will find its way to the grocery store label.

It is true that an educated person can acquire the information to make somewhat of an informed choice although it may take a life-time of dedicated searching and comparing cross-references. Novartis can even be a source of data. However, the person who trusts the evening news, or the clerk at Burger King to give him a balanced picture will be severely lacking. In addition, it appears from the following links that Novartis has great influence in shaping the above-mentioned "legal requirements" and "market demands", as well as the "consumer's desire for information":
